Footings for a future cedar pergola are seen in this small patio made of 1.5″-2″ Pennsylvania bluestone. When installing the stone in sand or 3/8″ screenings, we use thicker, large pieces, so it is stable underfoot. The spaces between the stones can be planted with groundcovers like creeping thyme, Corsican mint, or brass buttons. This flagstone patio beneath the pergola turned out beautifully with the deep tones in the rock showing wonderfully when damp.
